17 key tips to speed up your iPhone and Mac (without buying new hardware)

The good news: in most cases, you can get a noticeable speed boost without buying a new device. These are some of the best ways to tackle slow performance issues without guesswork.

A quick mindset shift: speed is usually one of three problems

Most slowdowns come from:

  • Not enough free storage (your device can’t “breathe,” especially when you’re near full storage)
  • Too many background tasks (CPU/RAM constantly busy)
  • Aging batteries or buggy software (performance gets capped or unstable—sometimes the root cause is battery-related)

Keep those three buckets in mind as you go through the checklist.

Part 1: Revving up your iPhone

1) Update smart (and don’t rush major upgrades)

Point releases (the smaller “dot” updates) often include bug fixes and performance patches.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If your iPhone is older, consider waiting a week or two after a major iOS release before upgrading—early versions can run extra background indexing that temporarily slows things down.

2) Do the classic full restart

If you haven’t restarted in weeks, you’re basically letting small glitches pile up—little crashes, stalled processes, and random junk that never clears cleanly.

  • Power the iPhone off completely.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Power it back on.

3) Stop automatic downloads you don’t need

Apps quietly updating in the background can waste storage, cellular data, and resources—especially if you have automatic downloads enabled across multiple devices.

  • Go to Settings > App Store.
  • Turn off App Updates (and any other automatic downloads you don’t want).

4) Reduce animations for a snappier feel

This won’t “upgrade” your processor, but it can make your phone feel faster (especially on older models).

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion.
  • Turn on Reduce Motion.

5) Clear Safari history and website data

Safari cache can balloon over time.

  • Go to Settings > Safari.
  • Tap Clear History and Website Data.

6) Free up storage (this is the biggest win)

When iPhone storage is nearly full, performance often drops because iOS has less room for temporary files.

  • Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  • Aim to keep at least 10% free.

This is also the most reliable form of “clearing space”—more effective than any cleaning app that promises miracles.

8) Check battery health (performance may be capped)

A worn battery can cause slowdowns and stability issues.

  • Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
  • If your iPhone reports significantly reduced capacity or recommends service, a battery replacement can be one of the most noticeable speed upgrades.

Also: keep an eye on charging habits. If you’re constantly in Low Power Mode or battling heat while charging, you can see more stutters than you’d expect. And yes, iOS throttles performance in certain conditions to protect the device—battery health is the first place to check.

Part 2: Supercharging your Mac

9) Use Stacks to clean up your desktop

This sounds cosmetic, but a cluttered desktop can create real overhead.

  • Right-click the desktop.

10) Remove menu bar clutter you don’t need

Menu bar apps often run constantly.

  • Hold Command (⌘).
  • Drag unwanted menu bar icons off the bar.

11) Set up Hot Corners for faster navigation

On iPhone:

  • Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings

On Mac (general guidance):

  • Restart, update macOS, and only then consider reinstalling or erasing if needed
