17 practical ways to speed up your iPhone and Mac (without buying new hardware)

Your iPhone and Mac don’t usually get “slow” overnight. It’s almost always a pileup of small things: storage creeping toward full, too many background processes, browser clutter, or a battery that can’t deliver peak power like it used to.

The good news: you can often get that “new device” snappiness back in under an hour.

Before you start: do this 60-second check

On iPhone: open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and note how much free space you have.

On Mac: open System Settings > General > Storage (or search for “Storage” in System Settings) and check what’s eating space.

If either device is constantly near full, performance will suffer. Storage breathing room is step zero.

Part 1: Speed up your iPhone (iOS)

1) Install point updates (but be strategic with major upgrades)

Minor iOS updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes. Check Settings > General > Software Update.

When it comes to major upgrades (for example, moving from iOS 26 to iOS 27 later this year), older devices sometimes feel slow for a few days while background indexing finishes. If your phone is older and you rely on it for work, consider waiting for the “.1” release unless you need a specific security fix right away.

2) Restart like you mean it (yes, it still works)

A full restart clears temporary system clutter and stops processes that quietly chew up memory.

Power the iPhone off completely, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

3) Cut down background downloads

Apps love updating themselves at the worst possible time.

In Settings > App Store, consider turning off Automatic Downloads (especially on older devices or when you’re often on cellular data).

4) Use Low Data Mode (when you want the phone to stop “doing stuff”)

Low Data Mode reduces background network activity (helpful when an iPhone feels laggy on busy networks, or when you’re trying to preserve both performance and battery).

You’ll find it in your Wi‑Fi settings (tap the “i” next to your network) and in Cellular settings.

5) Reduce motion and heavy visual effects

Animations look great, but they do cost GPU resources.

In Settings > Accessibility > Motion, turn on Reduce Motion.

If your iPhone feels “pretty but slow,” this one can be an instant win.

6) Clear Safari history and website data

Over time, Safari’s cache and site data can balloon and make browsing feel sluggish.

If your browser shows an error such as “conexao invalida,” “ungueltige verbindung,” or “verification de la connection,” clear the website data before assuming your iPhone has a hardware problem.

7) Keep storage from crossing the “almost full” line

When iPhone storage gets tight, iOS has less room for temporary files and can feel dramatically slower.

A solid goal is to keep at least 10% free (or roughly 10GB, whichever is larger).

If you need a quick storage rescue:

  • Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage in Settings > Photos (your full-quality originals stay in iCloud, while your phone keeps lighter versions).
  • Use Offload Unused Apps in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  • Delete and re-download giant apps you don’t use daily.

8) Clean up old message threads (especially ones full of videos)

Messages can quietly become a storage hog.

Delete old group threads and conversations that are basically “meme archives.” Your iPhone will thank you.

9) Stop force-quitting every app out of habit

It feels productive, but it can actually backfire.

10) Check battery health (this one is huge)

When an iPhone battery ages, it can struggle to deliver peak power. iOS may manage performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.

11) Audit “always-on” permissions

This is a performance and privacy move.

Apps with constant location access, nonstop notifications, or aggressive background refresh can drag down both speed and battery.

12) The nuclear option: back up, then factory reset

When an iPhone feels permanently sluggish, a clean reset can be the “fresh start” that removes years of accumulated clutter.

If you go this route:

  • Back up first (iCloud or Finder on a Mac).
  • Prefer setting up as a new iPhone, then reinstalling apps deliberately.

Part 2: Speed up your Mac (macOS)

13) Clean your desktop (seriously)

A desktop covered in screenshots, PDFs, and random files isn’t just messy—macOS has to render and manage those items.

Use Stacks to instantly group clutter:

Right-click on the desktop and choose Use Stacks.

14) Trim your menu bar and background helpers

Lots of menu bar apps means lots of tiny background processes.

Remove what you don’t use daily. Keep the essentials.

15) Use Hot Corners for faster “flow”

Hot Corners aren’t about raw performance—they reduce friction.

Go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Hot Corners and set one corner to:

  • Put display to sleep
  • Show desktop
  • Open Mission Control

Tiny change, big daily payoff.

16) Drag files to Dock apps (stop hunting through folders)

If you want to attach a file to an email, open a PDF in a specific app, or drop an image into a project:

Drag the file onto the app icon in the Dock.

It’s faster than opening the app first and then “File > Open…” every time.

17) Use the “speedy saving” trick in Save dialogs

When a Save dialog pops up and you already have the destination folder open in Finder:

Drag that folder into the Save dialog.

macOS will snap the Save location to that folder instantly.

Bonus: two Mac speed wins most people ignore
